Whether you’re listening to Q-Music in the car, scrolling through HLN during your break or watching VTM in the evening: there’s a very good chance you’ll come into indirect contact with work created at DPG Media by an Axxes consultant. ### The challenge Every day, thousands of people at DPG Media are hard at work providing us with compelling stories and new insights. This includes a great many journalists and programme makers, but also IT specialists who support them behind the scenes. Geert Van Wauwe, for example, has now been working as a Software Engineer at DPG Media for more than six years. "The culture is somewhat unusual, because people here really do expect you to stand up for your opinions. So simply putting on a headset and getting on with the coding isn’t really an option for us. In that respect, we really do see a good fit with how Axxes operates." — Geert Van Wauwe , Software Engineer, DPG Media DPG Media is a very flat organisation. We don’t operate on the basis of seniority or other hierarchies. People take on different tasks, but simply refer to themselves as Software Engineers. In addition, we naturally also have Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Architects and a Manager,’ says Geert. This horizontal IT culture ensures that everyone is very approachable. ‘At the same time, there’s also greater standardisation in the technology stack, enabling us to deliver even more value. The culture is somewhat atypical, because people here really do expect you to stand up for your opinions. So simply putting on a headset and coding isn’t the way we do things here. They focus on a wide range of services, from system administration to developing innovations such as VTM GO. ‘I’m part of the Editorial team, along with around 40 colleagues. We work for the print media, which has been evolving from print to digital for many years now. That’s important, because those paper newspapers and magazines won’t be around forever. You have to invest in IT and develop a long-term vision. If you cling solely to print, you’ll no longer be relevant in a few years’ time,’ says Geert. It is not just the form that is changing, but the content as well. ‘In the past, articles were mainly written based on reports from the major news agencies. Now you can also get news via social media or through data analysis. There are opportunities to create new types of articles and offer new online experiences.’ Furthermore, DPG Media is a unique company, as it has dozens of titles both at home and abroad. ‘That economy of scale is quite unique. We are therefore looking at technology that can help with content sharing.’ "Following the takeover, we managed to migrate the site to a future-proof system that is more secure, without any downtime, whilst at the same time cleaning up all the data. I’ve been in IT for a while now and I find it very impressive that we were able to achieve this within six months." \- Geert Van Wauwe, Software Engineer, DPG Media ### The editorial bot One of the innovations Geert and his team are working on is the website [alarmeringen.nl](https://alarmeringen.nl/). ‘This Dutch platform started out as a hobby project, which was acquired by DPG Media in 2022. Through the site, which attracts more than 2.5 million unique visitors every month, people can see Dutch emergency services responding to incidents in real time. Our editorial teams monitor the site to identify major road accidents or fires, for example. Following the acquisition, we managed to migrate the site to a future-proof system that is more secure, without any downtime, whilst also cleaning up all the data. It involves a great deal of work because DPG Media applies very high standards. I’ve been in IT for a while now and find it very impressive that we were able to achieve this within six months. Another such innovation is the editorial robot, which aggregates local news and topics such as the weather or sports news. ‘There is great potential for automation here, because there is more news than there are regional journalists. Consider, for example, scraping the website of a local council or an energy supplier to report on power cuts. In a similar vein, we are working on an internal messaging service that can pre-select stories for regional journalists across DPG Media’s various editorial teams in Belgium and the Netherlands. By scraping sources and determining what is relevant, we can assist regional and local editorial teams. ### The perfect match Most of these experiments start on a very small scale, but can then be scaled up significantly to involve the media group’s workforce of over 5,000 employees. ‘It’s important that we reach critical mass with our experiments as quickly as possible, because that will give us more time internally to work on them. Our editorial robot has enormous potential: in the long term, it could well produce more than half of our local articles. The impact of the News Service may be even greater: it enables us to efficiently cover news from smaller towns that editors would otherwise never get round to. Four consultants from Axxes, amongst others, are working on this, and they have ensured that the tool has flawlessly undergone a major migration process to meet DPG Media’s standards. That’s quite impressive. "In this case, they were junior staff from Axxes, but we had absolute confidence in them. And rightly so, as it turns out, because our productivity has tripled. They were the pieces of the jigsaw we needed, and I expect many more productivity gains in the long term." \- Geert Van Wauwe, Software Engineer, DPG Media Sixteen IT professionals from Axxes work at DPG Media. ‘DPG Media has outsourced part of its IT, but there are few organisations that are as well-suited to us in terms of culture and expertise as Axxes', says Geert. ‘They initially drew up a list of nine candidates for my department, from which we selected four people. In this case, they were junior roles, but we had absolute confidence in them. Rightly so, as it turns out, because our productivity has tripled.
